Life is for living

Building the mental muscle

Psychological fitness is as important as physical fitness.

We know how to look after our physical health, exercise, nutrition, sleep, but what are the equivilents for our mental health?

The pursuit of a happy, fulfilled life lies in your capacity to be mentally resilience and emotionally well.

Discovering the things that will unlock the best version of yourself. Ensuring you are better prepared for the unexpected difficulties, and ready to recognise opportunities as they arise.

Some ideas to get started

Be brave

Staying within our comfort zone means we know what to expect. We feel safe and secure. Life is predictable. Being brave, stretching ourselves beyond our comfort zone means we grow. The more regularly we step outside of our usual routines and push our boundaries, the more we get used to disruption and the easier it becomes to respond when things happen unexpectedly.

Just 'be'

‘Being’ is simply allowing things to be as they are, fully in the moment, strong and present. It’s not trying to fix or solve anything. It’s not trying to reach a goal and it’s not about being right or wrong. Sometimes the pressure to be active, to be doing stuff means we don’t truly value ‘being’. We think it’s a waste of time, that it’s being lazy or boring. Yet giving ourselves permission to just ‘be’ will provide the space to deepen our understanding, create the strength and agency for control.

Notice the good stuff

Paying attention to the positive things around us and what we can be grateful for helps us avoid the negativity bias. Overtime we develop our muscle for noticing the good in the world. People who build the muscle, experience more positive emotion, have better physical health, they live longer, are better at problem solving, have healthier relationships and are more resilient to setbacks.
